The library catalogue, WITCat, is now enhanced with data from LibraryThing.com, a vast database of information about books. WIT Library is the first library in Ireland to utilise this feature. Described as a social cataloguing web application, LibraryThing allows its users to catalog, store and share personal library catalogs and book lists.
By integrating LibraryThing with WITCat, certain
searches performed on the catalogue will now give
extra information about a book, such as:
- details of other editions and translations held by the library
- recommendations of similar books held by the library
The tag cloud found at the end of a record serves to highlight some of the more popular terms people use to describe a book. Clicking on a tag brings up a “Tag Browser”. This displays other books held by the library which have similar tags on LibraryThing.
